THE (INTERNAL) “GLOBAL MINDSET”
Every month as part of my management strategy, I have my direct reports read an industry article and report out what they learned. I also read the article so we can engage in a meaningful conversation. Recently one of them read an article in the June 2010 Chief Learning Officer Magazine called “The Global Mindset.”
The article discusses how leaders are taking mini-expatriate assignments to stretch their leadership skills and build global awareness. During our discussion, my team member wondered how he could have his own “mini-expat” experiences within The Ariel Group–ways he could take himself out of his regular context in order to stretch himself and gain a new perspective. Some ideas he’s contemplating include co-facilitating an Ariel Group Leadership Program, sitting in on an Executive Team meeting and working with the Design Team on new products. We are now going to include one or more of these “mini-expat” assignments in his goals for 2011.
I love the fact that this article inspired him to think about how he could challenge himself and explore other viewpoints. He has a new focus on developing his skills and is taking responsibility for coming up with stretch goals that seem like the best fit for him.
Beyond my role as coach (make sure the assignments happen and communicate with him on how to be successful in their execution), I am also personally inspired and plan to integrate more “expat” experiences into both my personal and team goals.
What internal “expat” experiences have you (or your direct reports) had at your company and how have they changed your perspective or given you insight?
